The Benefits of NLP in the Workplace

A workplace is a prime example of where people of different backgrounds, values, perspectives, cultures, religions, languages, communication styles, attitudes and behaviours are required to work cooperatively together. If employees align with company values and integration and cooperation are truly adopted, diversity offers incredible reward for individuals and the company.

However, there is often conflict in the workplace due to unfamiliarity, judgement, miscommunication, bias and resistance. Where there is conflict that is not addressed, like-minded employees may form a sub-culture within the workplace and this can increase conflict, which can in turn create risk for employees, clients and the company as a whole.

Integration programs which include NLP techniques can benefit employees, families of employees, clients and the company. NLP can develop better communication by building the bridge and encouraging true understanding of one another, company goals and how this will be of benefit to all stakeholders. Some examples of NLP techniques and their use are:

a) The use of the Hierarchy of Ideas can set the scene by finding areas and values that employees can initially agree on.

Once rapport is established with the aid of the Meta Model, Reframing situations and reviewing Perceptual Positions, teams can establish rapport and leave differences and obstacles behind (and learn from them).

To encourage the team to negotiate and agree on company goals, setting well-formed outcomes and boundaries ensure that everyone is on the same page, there is no bias, resources are assigned, goals are timed, and the goal is realistic.

b) True leadership is integral in the process of workplace integration and cooperation. Some employees may be resistant to change or cooperation. The leader should have established the Representational Systems of the employees concerned and use Motivation Strategies to move people toward the goal.

The Logical Levels of Change is a framework a leader of an organisation is able to use as the foundation of change. It aids in the identification of influences and the organisation is able to determine at which level change should take place and ensure that actions are in alignment with each level and the company goal.

Effective implementation of NLP in the workplace minimises conflict, encourages changed behaviours such as respect, cooperation, transparency, enhanced communication and teamwork, ultimately ensuing in the successful achievement of individual and company goals.
